SSRS Deprecation: Unlock a Future-Ready Migration With MetaFactor

Introduction: What Is SSRS and How Does It Compare to Power BI?

SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) is a Microsoft reporting tool used to create, manage, and deliver paginated reports. These reports are typically formatted for printing and follow a fixed layout, making them well suited for operational, financial, and compliance reporting. SSRS includes features like scheduled report delivery, parameter-driven filters, and export options such as PDF, Excel, and Word—capabilities often implemented with guidance from Calgary Power BI Experts.

Power BI, on the other hand, is a modern analytics platform focused on interactive data exploration and visual reporting. It allows users to create dashboards, analyze data in real time, and gain insights using AI-powered features. While SSRS is optimized for structured, static reports, Power BI supports dynamic, user-driven analytics. Calgary Power BI Experts often help organizations leverage Power BI Report Server to combine both paginated and interactive reports within a single platform.

SSRS Is Being Rolled Into Power BI Report Server

Microsoft has officially announced that SQL Server 2022 is the final version to include SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) as a separate installer. Starting with SQL Server 2025, SSRS will no longer be bundled with the database engine. Instead, Power BI Report Server will take its place as the primary platform for hosting and managing paginated reports in on-premises environments.

This shift reflects Microsoft’s strategy to streamline its reporting tools under the Power BI umbrella. Power BI Report Server supports traditional RDL reports, just like SSRS, while also offering the ability to host interactive Power BI reports. By consolidating both capabilities into a single platform, Microsoft is encouraging organizations to modernize their reporting infrastructure while maintaining compatibility with existing assets.

Transitioning from SSRS to Power BI Report Server
What Does This Mean for Your Existing SSRS Reports?

If your organization relies heavily on SSRS today, the good news is that existing SSRS reports will continue to work. Microsoft has committed to supporting SSRS 2022 with security updates until January 11, 2033. This gives businesses time to assess their current reporting landscape and begin planning a transition at their own pace. You can continue running SSRS 2022 even if you upgrade your SQL Server engine, as it can be installed and run independently.

However, it’s important to note that while the platform is still functional, it is no longer evolving. Microsoft has already deprecated several features, including Mobile Reports, the ability to pin reports to Power BI dashboards, and export options like Atom, DOC, and XLS formats. These capabilities are not receiving enhancements in newer releases. This signals a clear shift in focus toward Power BI Report Server and Power BI Service, where development and innovation are actively happening.

Migration Options and Tools

Migrating from SSRS to Power BI Report Server does not mean starting from scratch. One of the key advantages of Power BI Report Server is that it continues to support RDL files, the same report definition format used in SSRS. This allows most existing reports to be moved over directly, preserving key features such as scheduling, parameters, and export options.

Microsoft provides tools like Power BI Report Builder to help with this process. It allows users to create and edit paginated reports that work seamlessly with Power BI Report Server. In addition, several third-party solutions can assist with automating parts of the migration or even converting SSRS reports into interactive Power BI dashboards. While basic reports may transfer with little effort, more complex ones might require adjustment to fully benefit from the enhanced capabilities available in the Power BI environment.

Migration Workflow
Get Future Ready Now

Although SSRS 2022 will receive security updates until 2033, organizations should begin planning for the future today. Microsoft is no longer investing in new features or enhancements for SSRS. All platform innovation is now focused on Power BI and Power BI Report Server. This includes updates in data visualization, AI integration, mobile accessibility, and performance optimization.

Delaying your migration increases the risk of technical debt, where maintaining outdated systems becomes more complex and costly over time. In contrast, modernizing your reporting infrastructure now ensures long-term support, scalability, and access to ongoing improvements. By moving to Power BI Report Server, you position your business to take advantage of the latest reporting tools without compromising the structure and reliability of your existing SSRS reports.

Considering Alternatives to SSRS

For organizations that want to move entirely away from SSRS and explore other reporting platforms, there are several modern alternatives available. These tools vary in terms of features, architecture, and pricing models, but all support rich reporting capabilities beyond SSRS.

Power BI Service (Cloud-Based)

Power BI Service offers advanced features like AI-powered visuals, real-time dashboards, and extensive data connectivity in the cloud. It’s ideal for teams seeking scalability and collaboration.
